Coastal Scents: Unrefined Shea Butter Project...FAIL!

>> Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Yesterday I got my mini haul from Coastal Scents. What I got was some pigment samples (so much for only $1!!!), a makeup brush, shea butter and some fragrance oil. They also included a small blush sample which I though was kind of cool. Ill do the swatches for the pigments on a later post but for now I want to talk (and by talk I mean bitch) about the shea butter haha.

So most of you know I am one cheap mofo. I'm always looking to save money especially on beauty. Just like the time I thought I could cut my own hair for life and it'll only cost me $11 for the hair cutting scissors this shea butter project was a total FAIL! I was thinking I could make my own moisturizer by mixing the shea butter and fragrance alone. Okay I admit, I did see some videos that explained when you turn shea butter into a moisturizer you need jojoba oil and a bunch of other stuff but I thought, "Why? Some girls were applying it in raw form and it worked great for them...Ill just mix the shea butter and fragrance oil" Boy was I wrong...

My thoughts on the Shea Butter...

First of all, the shea butter smells HORRIBLE! Like wax and weirdness. I cant explain but believe me its bad. Its a subtle but lingering smell. Also, its very grainy. It absorbs into your skin and does leave you moisturized but not well enough for me to get over the smell and texture. I found the best way to apply it is working it into your skin, and then washing it off...or trying to wash it off. I discovered this on accident when I was testing it out. I rubbed it on my hand and that is when I noticed how intolerable the smell was. I went to wash it off and I felt as if it made my hand waterproof! The more I applied water the more it was working into my skin. Yes my skin was soft, albeit PUTRID! All day yesterday I was walking around with one stinky soft hand.

My thoughts on the Fragrances...

I was anticipating an unpleasant smell for the shea butter, but I never thought it was be that unpleasant. Lucky I also purchased these 3 fragrances, honey almond, sweet pea and apple extreme. Honey Almond was the only one I liked out of the three. The reviews on Sweet Pea implied it smelled like the one from bath and body works which is why I chose it but it smelled nothing like that! It just smelled like horrible perfume. I also bought Apple Extreme b/c I loooovve the smell of apples. Well it smelled Extreme alright, just NOT like apples. Again...it had a really bad perfume-y scent. Honey Almond smelled like nice clean soap from a nice casino hotel. I liked it a lot. A good thing about these fragrances is that they have lasting power. The smell stays on all day, just be sure to get the right one.

Help Please!!!

So now I have one big ass brick of stinky shea butter and fragrances I have no use for. Any advice??? Should I just buy the other oils to try and make it right this time or should I just give it away? Anyone work with this before? Hopefully Ill make something out of it to get my $$$ worth.

In other news...I'm moving this Friday!!! I'm soooooo excited! This is going to be a crazy year for me...I'm moving out for the first time and getting married. Anyone have any wedding advice or couples advice about living with your significant other? This is the first time we will be living together. Speaking of which, I really should be packing. I'm moving in 2 days and have not packed ANYTHING!

Hope you guys are having a wonderful week!!! ♥

If you need any advice or questions about wedding planning, feel free to ask me! My sister's wedding just past in April and I did a lot for her. Good luck with all the wedding planning and moving in with your future hubby. I love waking up to my husband every morning but just remember to give each other some space and have some ME time once in a while to keep you both sane!
