Shills Peel Off Mask & Oil Control Mask Review

>> Monday, May 31, 2010

Im always on the lookout for products that combat my oily skin. I feel like its a never ending battle. I know I shouldnt complain much because I could have worse skin and I could be oily all over as opposed to just my forehead but having oily skin in general is just plain annoying. I vented to my mom (who also suffers from combo-oily skin) about it last week and she told me that she'd pick oily over dry skin anyday because oily skin ladies are more resistant to wrinkles in the later years. I dont know if there is any truth to that but it made me feel a little better about having oily skin.

Anyhoo, last month I placed a big order at sasa.com and among other things I picked up this peel off mask & oil control mask. Iv'e been very pleased with these products so I thought Id do a review on them. I got these pics from sasa.com. I really didnt feel it was neccesary to take any personal pics for these.

Shills Magnetic Peel-Off Mask, $6.60
For some reason I cant seem to find any peel off masks in my area for cheap so I got really excited when I seen this for only $6.60. I like this product a lot, especially for my t-zone area. It says that you have to leave in on to dry for about 15-30 minutes but Ive found that this dries in much faster time. It doesn't remove the whiteheads on my nose as well as the biore strips did, Im still looking for a product comparable to the biore nose strips after finding that biore tests on animals! :( I do not know whether Shills does or not, I am still awaiting a reply on that. A caution I would note for this product is that it will rip your eyebrow hair apart! I got it just above my brows (A part I would have tweezed anyway thankfully) and when I peeled it off along came my hair with it! At least thats a testament to how strong it is I guess. All in all, this is a good product and I will re-purchase again if I get confirmation this company does not test on animals

Kuan Yuan Lian Oil-control Mask, $9.60 for 10pcs
This mask is amazing! Like the first one, Im still awaiting reply on whether this company tests on animals or not. I love this face mask. Its actually the first one of its kind that Ive tried. It can be tricky to apply at first but once the essence of the product absorbs your skin will be fresh and flawless! Contrary to the shills mask, it feels like you have to leave it on longer than 15-30 min for it to absorb but its well worth it. One thing I can see problematic about this mask is that it may not fit some faces. It wasnt a perfect fit for me, but nothing to complain about. I dont think it would fit a face like Tori Spellings or something like that though :/

In other news, I picked up some that wet n wild purple palette Ive been lemming and finally got my 88 warm palette. Ive been wanting to do some FOTD posts but I suck at taking pictures so bad! Its either that or my freaking face lol...Ill try and get some EOTD posts together tomorrow...and i more random news, I am soooo excited for ECLIPSE! My bf was sweet enough to get us tix to the midnight showing at the end of June. I cant wait! I such a Twi-hard :) Team Edward w/ Jacob's body!!! hehe lol/

Avon Be Blushed Cheek Color

>> Wednesday, May 19, 2010

I'm not a fan of cream blush colors/blush sticks. They just don't last on my oily skin type and can be difficult to work this. Unfortunately, these blush sticks just reinforced that statement. The colors are nice and they are easier to blend than other cream blushes I've tried but they have absolutely no staying power! Note even when I put a powder blush over to set it. I just haven't gave up on them because I really like the color. If you have skin more towards the drier side, I suggest you give these a try. The colors below are Mandarin Glow & Golden Rose. Mandarin Glow is a dark orangey-red color and gives off the perfect "flushed" look and golden rose is a shimmery golden tan with warm undertones. Perfect for that sun-kissed look.

pornstar makeup?

As you all know, I prefer porno makeup as opposed to the natural look. My makeup inspirations almost always from from women who just exude sex appeal as if they had no other facet. Women like Pam Anderson, Tera Patrick, Kim Kardashian...you get the picture.

Glady, Im not the only one who shares this odd preference. I learned that fellow beauty blogger Molly has the same inclination! She also had this wonderfully fun idea that we re-create looks inspired by our favorite pornstars! Btw, you should check her blog out, she's gorgeous! :) You can find her blog at princesslisax3.blogspot.com or you can just click here

Now I know not all of you will share this same affinity but I would love to know what you think about it. Would any of you love to do a look inspired by your favorite sexpot? Who are your favorites?

Id really love to hear your opinions so please comment back!

Thanks loves

Hime gyaru style fake nails

I recently picked these fake nails up from sasa.com for $5.10. I loved the look of them, they reminded me of that japanese style Hime Gyaru which means "princess gal" If I could pull that style off I swear I would dress like that everyday. Its so cute! Im content with small & more subtle variations of it though. If you are unfamiliar with this style, click here for a link to some google images of it

This set comes with 24 nails and no glue. The sizing is kind of weird, I would have to file these down for them to fit perfectly on my nails. I realize now that buying these nails was a complete a waste of money! Where the heck am I gonna wear this? I need to find some tea or princess party ASAP! This is not the kind of shit to rock wearing a t-shirt and sweat pants. I feel like I would have to be in a full on princess costume for these nails to make any kind of sense. Oh well, at least their nice to look at lol, they were only 5 bucks anyway, maybe Ill wear them halloween.

On another note, I was recently tagged by Mikki on a fun 50 question survey, Ill be completing that soon and tagging all you lovely ladies! :)

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

>> Monday, May 17, 2010

Hey Ladies, I just wanted to bring to light a subject that I am very passionate about which is Gay & Lesbian rights. Today is International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. On this day, 1990 homosexuality was removed from the list of mental disorders from the World Health Organization.

In my opinion, those who opposed people who are LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) are just grossly uneducated. It makes me sick that we live in a world where we cannot grant equal rights to some people solely based on their sexual preferences. I cant imagine the pain I would feel if I was told I couldn't get married. Its not just the rights I am saddened by, its the treatment - how the LGBT community is hated by those who don't understand or share the same preferences. Its pure ignorance to hate someone that you do not know. Its disgusting.

Please check the video out on this blog. (Feministing.com is actually a great blog so I recommend following as well) You can see from the video the harsh treatment these activists received while on their peaceful march. This makes my stomach turn with anger. Especially how those police officers grab the gay flag. I mean, was it really necessary to take the flag from them? Obviously these police are homophobic. Ugh, hopefully this world will come to its senses and grant everyone equal rights & fair treatment one of these days. I'm so glad I live in a diverse area.

Face & Eye Highlighters

Here's a review on some products I think are great to use for face & eye highlighting. The products are:

ELF All Over Face Color in Spotlight
This is a great highlighter for your face and browbone. Its has a very creamy consistency and glides on with ease. The color of this is a pearly white but when applied the pigment is very opaque leaving behind just traces of the pearl shimmer. The stick itself is extremely small but at 1 buck you really cant complain about that

ELF Bronzer in Luminous
On ELF's website, this is listed under "Bronzers" but I see it more as a highlighter. Like the ELF all over color stick mentioned above, this is also a great highlighter for your face and brow bone and its only a dollar. In the compact the color looks like a shimmery tan but its actually a lot lighter than that when applied. This is a shimmery light gold color that would work well with any skin tone. Ive heard from other reviews that this breaks easy but mine has yet to do so

MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study
I use this as a eye shadow base & brow bone highlighter more than a face highlighter. The pigment of this is a cool-toned pearl with pink and gold shimmers. This is a more pricey alternative to the previous mentioned at $16.50

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cottage Cheese
I bought this as a cheaper alternative to High Beam as a highlight for my tear duct. In my opinion, this works better than High Beam which is great because I bought this at $1.99 & High Beam was close to $30. The only thing High Beam has on this is that you can use High Beam all over your face whereas this I only use in my eye area. This is the strongest pigment out of all the highlighters mentioned and comes out very similiar to what it looks like in solid form. The only complaint I have about this pencil is that it doesnt go well with the jumbo pencil sharpener I already have. I think you'd have to buy the one from NYX.

Please see below for pics & swatches:

Old Haul: NYX & Red Cherry

Ive been planning on doing a makeup blog for quite sometime now, months before I even started this one. I guess I got discouraged because I'm not a professional makeup artist and I didn't have nearly as much makeup as the other beauty bloggers I read. The day I admitted to myself that I was addicted to makeup was the day I started this blog lol. I noticed myself buying tons and tons of makeup thinking, "Oh I need this" or "If I just get this set I wont have to buy makeup again for a long long time" Did I live up to that? Heck No! I still catch myself saying those things then turning around and buying makeup again. I just bought from Cherry culture like one week ago hoping that would be my makeup budget for the month and what did I do last night? I ordered the 88 Warm Palette. Granted the things I buy aren't ridiculously expensive, but that's still no reason to go haul crazy like I do almost every month. I'm so impulsive sometimes it makes me sick. Having a makeup blog makes me feel like I didn't completely waste all my money on items that's I'm only gonna use once then banish into my endless makeup drawer.

Anyhoo, as I was saying...Ive played with the idea of creating my own makeup blog long before I started this one. I even took pictures of my makeup and hauls. Luckily I saved them and now they can be put to good use! Here's an old haul I did last year

Row 1 NYX eye shadows: Ultimatum/Red Bean Pie/Exotic Green
Row 2 NYX eye shadows: Skin Tight/Morocco/Smoke Mountain

Same 2 rows as mentioned above but with the NYX stick concealer in beige & Red Cherry lashes #49 (falsies for your lower lash line).
(don't know why I took 2 of the same pictures switching out the lashes in concealer :/)

Swatches for the eye shadows and concealer

These shadows as w/ mostly all NYX shadows break really easy. Either than that, the pigmentation is great. I never used the lashes though. They were a little to long for my taste. I don't think I have enough patience to work with lower falsies anyway. I also did some EOTD with the Red Bean Pie and Exotic Green that I will post next

random ramblings...opinions please?

So lately Ive been thinking about changing the name of my blog and/or blogger address. I cant think of anything catchy though. Nothing cool rhymes with "Leah" lol. My current blogger address is jetleah.blogspot.com and I picked that name because I'm a HUGE fan of Jet Li (and of course because my name is Leah :)). I love old china kung fu. Im not a big fan of Jet Li's or Jackie Chan's american movies like Romeo Must Die or Rush Hour. I prefer when Jet Li was Fong Sai Yuk and when Jackie Chan was the Drunken Master. Anyways, I better stop before I start trailing off into to my complete and boring 2 cents about kung fu. The point I'm trying to make is Jet Li has nothing to do with this makeup! I really need to change that address.

My blog title sucks too. It was the first thing I thought about and just stuck with it cuz I wanted to start posting shit already. Prior to this being a makeup blog it was a random blog about my life called "The New Deep" I got that from a John Mayer song that I love. I could change it back to that but it still has nothing to do with makeup.

I also wanted this to be a makeup and poker blog but I don't really write about poker as much as I'd like to. I don't think there is really much to write about my poker experiences anyway. You win some, you lose some. Although I love poker more than makeup, I think makeup is just more fun to write about :)

In other news, I think my cbox is working now. When I first created one I clicked "lock" and then forgot to "unlock" it. Hopefully that solves the problem.

Any ideas of what I could change my blog name to would be much appreciated. Also, I would really love if you have any suggestions on what I should post more of or if there is anything you would like me to change, add, or remove on this blog.

And please let me know if you are a follower that I am not following already. I really appreciate you taking interest in my blog and I would love if I could return the favor.

♥ Leah

Milani Secret Cover Concealer (update)

>> Tuesday, May 11, 2010

I just wanted to do a quick update on my post for Milani's Secret Cover Concealer. You can read the original post here. Ive been using this for a couple days now so I think some adjustments need to be made on the CONS section in my original post.

I wrote that one of the CONS of the concealer was that it condensates and doesn't last long. Boy was I wrong about that. This concealer lasts extremely long, and it is very waterproof. I actually have difficulty removing this when washing my face. What I will say about this concealer is that it is temperature-sensitive. When there is a lot of humidity in the air, the concealer will start to condensate and become creamy, and when the air is dry and the temperature cooler, the consistency of the concealer hardens and does not produce any condensation. Today was a cool day with little humidity so when I put this concealer on this morning it was very hard. It was difficult to apply with a concealer brush as I usually do so I used my fingers. Although hard this concealer did blend quite well around my eyes without me tugging the skin or what not. Hot or cold, this concealer still performs very well, I would even count that as a negative.

Also, I would note that the concealer only comes in 6 shades, and the one I purchased which is the Warm Beige is the lightest one they have. So if you're lighter than NW25/NC30, there may not be a shade for you. You also have to be weary of shopping for it online, as the color picture online does not match the color it is in person.

Here is the swatch for warm beige

Here is the picture online for Warm Beige.
You can see the extreme difference in color

All in all I still highly recommend this concealer. Seriously, I cannot stress enough, if you are NW25-NC30 get this concealer!!! Its that amazing

Please note that I am not affiliated with the brand in any way shape or form and I bought this with my own money (They should be paying me for this shit though :P)

NYX Smokey Eye Palette vs. NYX Smokey Look Kit (Pic Heavy)

So we don't get confused I'm going to refer to the Smokey Look Kit as "SLK" and the Smokey Eyes Palette as "SEP"

I'm a really big fan of the "Smokey Eye" look. To me, there's nothing sexier. I don't know why I feel the need to pounce on any palette with the word "smokey" on it when I have millions of eye shadows in the black-gray family already. So when I was looking through some NYX products on cherryculture.com and seen this "Smokey Look Kit" I knew I had to have it. When I received my packaged, I opened it only to find I already had these colors in my NYX Smokey Eyes Palette! I was kind of bummed about it but then I realized a girl could never have too many smokey eye shadows right? Plus, my SEP was so ruined already! NYX eye shadows are great but they crumble way too easy. I wouldn't recommend carrying them in your purse. You'll see from the photos. Honestly I blame the packaging. The shadows are spread way too thin on a palette to wide. Please see below for all the details, photos and swatches for each set. Click on the name for a link to where I purchased them. Please note, I am not affiliated with that company and these sets were bought with my own money

NYX Smokey Eyes Palette (SEP)
This set comes with 10 shadows, a mirror, and an eye shadow applicator (which I lost, I never use those things anyway)
I know its all jacked up, can you believe I only dropped this twice?! I never really used it since because its so fragile.

w/o flash

with flash

NYX Smokey Look Kit (SLK)
This set comes with 9 shadows, 2 lip colors, a mirror and eyeshadow and lip brush (which again, I have lost lol)
The shadows are a lot smaller in size which is cool I guess because I don't see this crumbling like the SEP

with flash

w/o flash

Here are the lip colors. I really don't see myself wearing any of these, I don't fancy lippies that come in this form. The pink color is nice though.

Swatches & Comparison

So here are the swatches. This swatch comes from the SEP. I didnt bother swatching the SLK because they are the exact same eyeshadows.

with flash

w/o flash

I did however find that the SEP comes with one more shadow than the SLK. Here is the comparison

As you can see, the swatch on the right coming from the SEP is the eyeshadow not available on the SLK. Both are gray shadows but the SEP gray has a nice shimmer to it

Here's my final thoughts...
Both SEP & the SLK are good buys. They both have a wide variety of shadows to create that smokey look, and each box they are packaged in comes with step by step directions fpr application if needed. The only difference is that the SLK comes with two lip colors and the SEP comes with one extra shadow. Also, you get a lot less shadow with the SLK, but the packaging is a lot smaller and easy to carry in your makeup bag. Its all on your personal preference which one is right for you.

Buyer Beware!!!
These shadows break easy! I dont see the SLK breaking that much because the shadows are so small but we'll see. Ive carried it in my makeup bag for a couple days now with no problem. Aside from breaking easy, these shadows can get very messy and powdery. I think thats with all NYX shadows though. Usually to remedy this I apply my shadow before my face makeup and wipe the excess when I am finished.

Would I re-purchase?
Maybe. You know when youre going through your makeup and find a item that you havent used in awhile, then you start using it and loving it for like a week, then it goes back into that pile to be forgotten again? I see the SEP and SLK being one of those products for me

I'll do a FOTD probably on the next post using one of these palettes. Stay tuned for my review on the NYX gloss mauve and Desert Rose blush!
